Roman Boxing Gym Travels to Spain for Sparring Success

Boxers from Roman Boxing Gym recently travelled to Torremolinos, Spain, for an unforgettable sparring trip. This incredible opportunity allowed boxers Ronny and Max to test their skills against top-level opposition, experience different boxing styles, and broaden their horizons through the sport.

Max stepped into the ring against a two-time Spanish national champion. Although it was not an official bout, the sparring was structured to simulate competition conditions, with a referee overseeing the action.

Ronnie Scott also impressed against his talented Spanish opponent. He boxed well and put on a strong display.

The event was hosted by Postigo Boxing Club and facilitated by Martin of Grey Ranks Boxing Club, who has a long-standing connection with the Roman coaching team, and Dave Poulsen, a former coach at Weymouth who has since moved to Spain. Recognizing the opportunity for quality sparring, Martin arranged the sessions, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all involved. The selection of Roman’s boxers for this trip was based on their strong past performances. Ronny had previous international experience with Grey Ranks, having travelled to Poland with them last year. Ronny and Max then impressed in their performances on the Grey Ranks show in Weymouth, where their skills caught the eye of the Postigo Boxing coach in attendance. This led to their invitation to the sparring programme in Spain.

The small but dedicated squad, consisting of two boxers from Roman Boxing Gym and four from Grey Ranks, made the journey a memorable one, further solidifying the partnership between the clubs involved. Accompanying the team were Roman Boxing coaches Darren and Luke. Reflecting on the trip, they emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with other clubs. “Martin likes the style of our boxing, and he knows that we are developing good boxers,” Darren noted. “As a club, we’re reliable, easy to work with, and get things done.”

With a successful trip behind them, both clubs are committed to future exchanges. Plans are already in motion to welcome Spanish fighters to our upcoming show in Bath, and a return trip to Spain next year is on the horizon. We are excited to keep building these international connections and look forward to further opportunities for international collaboration, ensuring that our boxers continue to gain valuable experience both inside the ring and out.
