Roman Boxing has a real opportunity to secure the space we already use and establish a permanent home for the club and the wider Bath community.

This is not a proposal for a future project or a plan to move into a new building. The gym is already operating every week as our training base. We have exclusive use of the premises at all times, and the facility is fully functioning as a boxing gym training over 150 people each week.

The opportunity in front of us is both rare and time sensitive. Our rental agreement ends in two years. Before then, we must raise £275,000 towards the purchase of the leasehold with 360 years remaining. If we are unable to achieve this, the building will return to the open market and we will be forced to leave the premises. This would mean returning once again to the uncertainty that has affected much of the club’s history.

Since being established on Boxing Day in 2018, the club has already operated from four different venues. Those moves were driven by demand for training, with venue size and shared use limiting what we were able to offer. Availability constraints also limited what the club could confidently offer to the community. In the past, we have been unable to commit to activities such as after school programmes because we could not guarantee that we would have reliable access to training space.

Training sessions have been cancelled or interrupted, equipment has needed to be packed away then brought out again, schedules reorganised, and members repeatedly asked to adapt to changing timetables. Dozens of sessions per year have historically been disrupted or cancelled due to venue issues, often with only a few days notice. Over time, that inconsistency has a wider impact than people often realise. Those who rely on us lose routine and their momentum is broken. For a community club that supports many vulnerable members, routine and consistency is important. Whenever training is interrupted, some people inevitably fall away from the sport altogether. For many members, especially for younger members, the gym provides structure, discipline, social connection and a dependable environment. Repeated disruption makes it much harder to maintain those positive habits and relationships.

Since moving to Bellotts Road in April 2026, we have had exclusive use of the gym at all times. The building provides more space than previous venues, allowing us to accommodate our largest classes and helping solve capacity problems that previously forced us to turn people away. Exclusive use of the building also means we can run sessions consistently and plan activities properly without worrying about shared access, sudden cancellations or losing availability.

A huge amount of voluntary effort has gone into creating this gym. Since November last year, over 1,000 hours of volunteer labour have been used to transform a former engineering works into the boxing gym that now serves our members and community. This is already a functioning community asset built through hard work, commitment and volunteer dedication. We have the chance to secure it permanently. 

Owning the lease will bring the long term stability to this popular, impactful community driven club which it has never previously had. We will be able to plan years ahead rather than months, develop new programmes, confidently strengthen partnerships within Bath, and provide the consistency and reliability our members deserve. If we cannot secure the building, we risk losing not only the premises itself, but also the momentum, stability and opportunities that will have been built around it.

This campaign is our only opportunity to stop moving from temporary arrangement to temporary arrangement and instead put down permanent roots for the future of boxing in Bath, protecting what has already been built.
